This pin honors Fonso, who won the much disputed 1880 Kentucky Derby. Due to an incredibly dry Spring, the horses kicked up so much dust on the track that Fonso’s win over Kimball by a length was questioned; fortunately for Fonso and jockey George Garret Lewis, the decision was never reversed. Lewis was a stuttering Waldorf Hotel bellboy turned jockey who walked away from his win with a hefty sum. Fonso was bred by A. J. Alexander at Woodburn Stud Farm in Woodford County, Kentucky, owned by J. S. Shawhan and trained by Tice Hutsell.
A Kentucky Derby Museum Exclusive.
