Product Description

This pin honors Lieutenant Gibson, who won the 1900 Kentucky Derby with jockey and trainer Charles Hughes up. It was an easy win: so easy that a journalist reporting on the race for the Courier-Journal wrote that Lieutenant Gibson could have slowed to a gallop in the last stretch. Lieutenant Gibson tried to recreate his victory in the American Derby the next year, but had a disappointing loss. He retired soon after from horse racing. Lieutenant Gibson was bred by Coronel Bob Baker and Gentry and owned by Charles Head Smith.
