This pin honors Elwood, winner of the 1904 Kentucky Derby to surprise spectators and bookies alike. Elwood has been bred at Faustiana Stud Farm in Missouri, and few thought the “Missouri Mule,” as he was called, could win a Derby. Elwood, however, drove to the finish, beating track-favorite Ed-Tierney. Elwood was owned by Laska and William Durnell of San Francisco, and Laska, without the knowledge of her husband, entered Elwood into the Kentucky Derby. The Durnells traveled via rails to Kentucky from California with Elwood.
