This pin honors Alan-A-Dale, winner of the 1902 Kentucky Derby with 1901 Derby winning jockey James Winkfield up. After one half mile of the race, Alan-A-Dale had already gained a six length. Shockingly, Alan-A-Dale became lame in the last stretch, but heroically continued running to win the Derby by a nose over Inventor. He was bred, owned and trained by Thomas Clay McDowell of the Ashland Stud Farm in Lexington, KY. Alan-A-Dale was the son of 1895 Derby winner and Ashland-bred horse Halma.
