This pin honors George Smith, winner of the 1916 Kentucky Derby with U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey John Loftus up. The race began easily, and while George Smith maintained his fast pace, Star Hawk made a spectacular rush down the final stretch, causing George Smith to win by only a nose. In retirement, George Smith failed to produce winning thoroughbreds, but was valued as a sire for military horses. George Smith was bred by Fred A Forsythe and Coronel Jack Chinn at the Fountain Blue Farm in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, owned by John Stanford and trained by Hollie Hughes.
