Product Description

This pin honors Old Rosebud, winner of the 1914 Kentucky Derby with jockey John McCabe up. Old Rosebud won the Derby by eight lengths, shattering Donerail’s record for fastest finish made only the previous year. Old Rosebud ran the mile and a quarter race in 2:03.25. After the Derby, Old Rosebud sustained an injury that would eventually necessitate his retirement from horse racing, but only after he won more than ten major races. Blood-Horse Magazine has ranked Old Rosebud as #88 of the Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century, and in 1968, the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inducted Old Rosebud into a rightful place of honor. Old Rosebud was bred by John E. Madden at Hamburg Place in Lexington, KY, owned by Frank D. Weir and Hamilton Applegate and trained by Weir.
