Kentucky Derby Museum: FINISH LINE GIFT SHOP

This pin honors Zev, winner of the 1923 Kentucky Derby with jockey Earl Sande up. Zev won easily, holding off his only true contender in the race, Martin Gale, until the end. Despite his excellent run in the Derby, Zev is perhaps best known for his 1923 Belmont Stakes race where he became the first Kentucky Derby winner to defeat an Epsom Derby winner. Zev was bred by John E. Madden at Hamburg Place in Lexington, Kentucky, who had already bred three previous Derby winners: Old Rosebud in 1914, Sir Barton in 1919 and Paul Jones in 1920. He was owned by Harry F. Sinclair’s Rancocas Stables and trained by Sam Hildreth and David J. Leary. Zev became a U. S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee in 1983 and is ranked #56 in Blood-Horse Magazine’s Top 100 Racehorses of the 20^th Century.
