Product Description

This pin honors Gallahadion, winner of the 1940 Kentucky Derby with jockey Carroll Bierman up. Down the final stretch, Gallahadion raced neck and neck with Bimelech, one of “Colonel” Bradley’s horses and the betting favorite, winning by only a nose at the finish. Bimlech would go on to beat Gallahadion in both the Preakness and the Belmont, but Gallhadion’s Derby win kept Bimlech from clinching the fifth Triple Crown. Gallahadion’s breeder was Robert A. Fairbairn, who sired him out of 1928 Derby winner Reigh Count. He was then sold to Ethel V. Mars, wife of the Mars Bars magnate Franklin C. Mars and trained by Roy Waldron at the Milky Way Farm in Tennessee.
