Product Description

This pin honors Spectacular Bid, winner of the 1979 Kentucky Derby with jockey Ronnie Franklin up. Fans and critics alike were buzzing the Spectacular Bid would make just that for the Triple Crown to become the 3rd Triple Crown winner in 3 years and the 4th in the decade; the buzz only heightened when he won the Eclipse award for Best 2-year old Colt in 1978. In the Derby, Spectacular Bid won over General Assembly (a son of Secretariat); in the Preakness he won easily by 5.5 lengths. Unfortunately, in the Belmont he was unable to hold on and came in 3rd.

Spectacular Bid was bred by Mrs. William Jason and Mrs. William Gilmore, owned by Harry Meyerhoff at his Hawksworth Farm and trained by Buddy Delp. In retirement he stood at Claiborne Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. He won Horse of the Year in 1980, is ranked #10 in The Blood-Horse magazine’s Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century and was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1982.
