1953 Dark Star Tac Pin
This pin honors Dark Star, winner of the 1953 Kentucky Derby by a small margin over Native Dancer with jockey Hank Moreno up. Dark Star’s win was an upset to the betting pool, as most had favored Native Dancer. Native Dancer would go on to win the Belmont and the Preakness and have a successful career after ’53. Dark Star, after his “dark horse” win in the Derby, unfortunately sustained a leg injury that forced him into retirement.
He was bred at Hermitage Stud by Warner L. Jones Jr. and owned by Harry F. Guggenheim at Cain Hoy Stables. His trainer was Moody Jolley.
A Kentucky Derby Museum Exclusive.
Pin measures 0.75 X 1”.
