1978 Affirmed Tac Pin
This pin honors Affirmed, winner of the 1978 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown with U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen up. In the Derby, Affirmed raced along the outside of the field and took the lead to hold off Alydar and finish first; in the Preakness and the Belmont he also raced closely with Alydar, only to overtake him in the end. The rivalry between Affirmed and Alydar would be legendary in horse racing circles and would continue until the end of both horses’ careers. Affirmed would become the 11th Triple Crown winner, finishing his career with the further distinctions of winning 22 of his 29 career starts and a purse of $2,393,818.

He was bred and owned by Lou Wolfson at the Harbor View Farm in Fellowship, Florida and trained by Racing Hall of Fame inductee Laz Barrera. He is ranked #12 in The Blood-Horse magazine’s Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century and received a 1980 induction to the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame.
