1996 Grindstone Tac Pin
This pin honors Grindstone, winner of the 1996 Kentucky Derby with jockey Jerry Bailey up. Grindstone raced to the front of the field quickly, wearing down Cavonnier to win. Immediately after the Derby, Grindstone’s owner retired him from racing due to a knee injury. He went on to stand as a stud at Oakhurst Farm, producing the sire who would foal 2009 Derby Winner Mine that Bird. Grindstone was bred by William T. Young at Overbrook Farm in Lexington, KY, owned by Oregon’s Oakhurst Farm and trained by Hall of Fame inductee D. Wayne Lukas.
