2001 Monarchos Tac Pin
This pin honors Monarchos, winner of the 2001 Kentucky Derby with jockey Jorge Chavez up. Monarchos had a terrible start—bumped and jostled enough to fall to the back of the field—but managed a great rush to defeat the front-runner Conagree. In that Derby, Monarchos set new records for the race, his top race speed second only to Secretariat’s incredible win in 1973. Unfortunately, Monarchos was not able to hold on in either the Preakness or the Belmont; he retired to Claiborne Farm in Paris, KY, and now resides at a farm in Midway. Monarchos was bred by James D. Squires, owned by John C. Oxley and trained by John T. Ward, Jr. A Kentucky Derby Museum Exclusive.
